Dunlop sponsors adventurers’ African expedition

Southern Africa

Sumitomo Rubber South Africa (PTY) LTD (SRSA), manufacturer of the popular Dunlop tyre brand, will again sponsor the adventure duo Peter van Kets and Jacques Marais on their quest to push the limits into Africa on their 2018 expedition.

“The Beyond the Rift Valley expedition sees world-renowned professional adventurer Peter van Kets, photo-journalist Jacques Marais – and their support crew – venturing into the heart of Central Africa taking on 14800kms of Africa’s toughest terrain, from Cape Town to Rwanda and back again. The team will journey through impenetrable forest, kayak across legendary lakes, ascend Africa’s highest volcanoes and conquer the Nile Congo divide,” says Riaz Haffejee, CEO of SRSA. “Beyond the Rift Valley is set to be another epic Grandtrek adventure.”

The expedition’s support vehicles will again be shod with the rugged performance tyre, the Dunlop Grandtrek AT3G. Post-trip inspection following the duo’s Beyond the Desert expedition, in mid-2017, showed the AT3G tyres had surpassed all expectations, overcoming shale, rocks, sand, gravel and tar to emerge from the over 7000km journey barely worn and with only minor scuffing.

“The AT3G will again be put through its paces, but this is a tyre designed for rugged performance off the beaten track. The hefty 3-ply sidewall provides superior strength, improved high load capacity and better resistance to cuts and punctures than the standard 2-ply sidewall,” says Haffejee. “The adventurers can load their vehicles and trailers to the limit and head off the beaten track with confidence.”

Peter van Kets said, “We are looking forward to putting the Grandtrek AT3G tyres to the test again – pushing them further than most off-road enthusiasts would ever dream of! The trip includes highway driving and some of the most challenging terrain in Africa. We expect that the tyres will perform just as well as they did on our previous expedition – with no failures.”

“As a brand, good is never good enough for Dunlop,” says Haffejee. “We embrace technological advancement and constantly seek to improve our offering. Dunlop now has an extensive range of 4×4/SUV tyres on the market – with a tyre to meet nearly every need – from highway driving to rough, rugged terrain.”

There is a Grandtrek tyre for every terrain and SUV/4×4 application – from the AT25, which is the 100% OE specified tyre for the Toyota Hilux Black Edition and the Toyota Fortuner 18-inch derivatives from Toyota South Africa, to the AT3G which is in a league of its own with outstanding wet handling and braking, added stone ejectors and everything in between.

Riaz Haffejee, CEO of SRSA said: “The AT3G may be the tyre of choice for 4×4 enthusiasts embarking on off-road jaunts and commercial users needing tyres that can handle tough rural terrain, but the range also includes 13 patterns specific for highway terrain, 10 for all terrain conditions and an additional two – the MT1 and MT2 for mud terrain conditions.”

The output of high-quality passenger and SUV tyres at SRSA will increase due to the company’s two-phase, multi-billion-rand investment into its Ladysmith manufacturing plant.
