Several large prizes are at stake for competitions running at Automechanika Johannesburg 2019, which takes place at Expo Centre, Nasrec, from Wednesday, 18 September to Saturday 21 September. These prizes include an entry and transport costs to compete in the finals of the Automechanika Body & Paint World Championships, at Automechanika Frankfurt next year, R200,000 in cash prizes and a business mentorship programme in the ABSA Enterprise Development Den initiative and prizes to the value for R150,000 for contestants in a tyre changing competition. Not to mention a daily draw competition for visitors to the show, worth up to R10,000.
Automechanika Body & Paint World Championships
Automechanika Frankfurt 2020 is featuring Body & Paint as an independent product group for the first time and in celebration of this occasion, Messe Frankfurt, the trade fair organisers, have launched an international Body & Paint competition.
Qualifying events will take place alongside Automechanika trade fairs for the automotive aftermarket in South Africa, the United Kingdom, China, Dubai, Mexico, and Germany. The winners in each country will then compete in the finals at Automechanika Frankfurt, in September 2020.
In each country the contestants must design the bonnet of a car using their country as an inspiration. A panel of experts will select the national winner and, in addition, trade visitors at the shows will be able to pick a “people’s choice winner” by voting for their favourites at the event or online at www.automechanika.com/competition. The winner of the people’s choice will receive a gift hamper.
Tyre-changing competition
The tyre-changing competition is open to anyone who is an employee of a registered tyre dealership in South Africa. It is much more than just the changing of the tyre but has other facets such as diagnosing tread wear patterns and also includes a training session.
This year’s Automechanika Johannesburg includes more than 30 skills development workshops on a wide range of subjects for which there is no charge for participants. Subjects range from health & safety, to turbocharger enhancements and electric vehicle charging systems.
To enter this competition, competitors need to e-mail: tyre.competition@rmi.org.za
ABSA Enterprise Development Den
The ABSA Enterprise Development Den is an initiative by ABSA bank to drive and support locally black owned SME companies in the sector.
It is an opportunity for any local company meeting a set of outlined criteria to ‘pitch’ their unique products or services to a panel of judges from ABSA Bank, during Automechanika 2019. The three winners will be announced on Friday 20th September, at the ABSA stand in hall 6, with total cash prizes to the value of R200,000, 1st prize will be R100,000 that will be directed towards further development of the winner‘s company in a form of a Grant from the enterprise development team.
The business person must show that their business/idea is scalable and have a competitive advantage in the sector and the market including displaying financial needs. The winner will also be offered a business mentorship programme from ABSA bank that includes funding, assistance in developing a business plan and advice on managing cash flow.
Live product demonstrations
In addition to the competitions, there will be six interactive zones as well as demonstrations of a variety of products by companies such as Plascon, Diesel Electric, Aer-o-cure, VISIOMAX, Road Eye Systems and Jendamark to name a few.
Another activity area will be advanced driving demonstrations by staff from Gerotek, the government-owned test track west of Pretoria, behind Hall 8.
This is the sixth time that the world-renowned Automechanika trade fair for the automotive aftermarket has been staged in Johannesburg. It has established itself as the biggest trade fair of its kind in Africa and continues to attract more exhibitors and an increasing number of visitors. This year there has been special focus on bringing trade visitors from Sub-Saharan Africa and setting up one-on-one business-to-business meeting opportunities.
This year’s show will use four halls at Expo Centre to display the products and services of more than 600 local and international exhibitors from 27 countries, as well as a lot of outside space at the venue.
This means trade visitors, who enter the facility at no charge, will have four days to visit the various stands and network with industry peers. In addition, two other shows, the Futuroad Expo of commercial vehicles and the Scalex logistics expo, will be co-located with Automechanika Johannesburg. The show will be open from 09:00 to 16:30 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and from 09:00 – 14:00 on Saturday.
